We picked up Casper from a very nice family today. He was one of three parrots in the home and the owners were getting older and didn't feel like they were able to take care of them anymore. They clearly loved their birds, so it is a sad occasion but a responsible choice. Casper is a 30 year old male Umbrella Cockatoo or U2 was we usually call them.
Casper will be getting an upgrade from a 40x30ish size cage to a 62x32 Double Parrot cage from Natural Inspirations Parrot Cages. I am hoping he enjoys the extra room but so far he hasn't explored much of the cage. He did mess around with a couple of the toys that were hanging nearby and accepted some bread but I am sure he is a little nervous as this is a really big change in his life. Not only has he been moved from the only family he has ever known but he lost his Amazon Orange wing friend that he was pretty infatuated with.
This will also be a bit of an adventure for us fostering as well. We have never fostered a U2 or any of the large Too's and they can sometimes be challenging. We really don't know much about this guy yet. He has been pretty quiet so far. Here is a short video of him in the travel cage when we first got home.
I'll hope to get some better pictures and more information tomorrow!
